Comcast is introducing new advertising capabilities, called segmented advertising, for its television and online services.

Segmented Advertising - How to Opt-Out

  1. Go to
  2. Click on Advertising Preferences.
    Comcast Segmented Advertising screen contains Advertising Preferences link.
  3. Sign in with your Comcast ID and password.
    Sign-in Screen has fields for email (or username) and password.
  4. On either the My Services tab or the Users and Preferences tab, click on Manage segmented advertising/Manage advertising preferences.

  5. A pop-up will appear. Please read the information presented and scroll to the bottom.

  6. Select Opt Out of segmented advertising and click Save.

What is segmented advertising?

Comcast is introducing new advertising capabilities, called segmented advertising, for television and online services. Segmented advertising groups together households with similar characteristics, and then delivers ads that may be of the most interest to these groups, instead of delivering the same ads to everyone. Segmented advertising does not change the number of ads you will see. It simply increases the likelihood you will see ads about products and services that are more relevant to you.
How does Comcast know what ads I want to see?
For segmented advertising, Comcast uses readily available market-research data that we obtain from a third-party company. This data is also routinely used for direct mail purposes to create an anonymous group or “segment” of households. For example, car dealers want their ads featuring larger cars to reach households that are likely to include families. With an advertiser’s guidance about what kind of audience group it thinks will be most interested in a particular advertisement, Comcast is able to deliver ads to the groups that are most likely to be interested in the advertiser’s product.

Does this mean that I’m going to see more ads?
No, the number of ads you will see will not change at all. The only difference is that the ads you see may be about products and services that you find more relevant or interesting to you.

This somehow seems like an invasion of privacy.
When your household is included in an advertising group, your name or other identifying information is never given to an advertiser. The exception is if you specifically request that your name and contact information be shared with an advertiser because you want to receive more information from them. I’m still not comfortable with this and don’t want Comcast to do this.
