Introduction

The XFINITY Wireless Gateway is an all-in-one device that connects your Internet, phone, and home networking. You’ll be able to share files with computers and other electronic products that are connected to your home network.

  • Create a secure wireless home network and connect your computers, laptops, and other WiFi electronic products (such as game systems, tablets, or mobile phones). With the XFINITY Wireless Gateway, you can also connect up to four products using a wired connection.
  • Connect two phones (or a phone and fax) to the XFINITY Wireless Gateway, if you subscribe to two lines with XFINITY Voice service.
  • If your computer or WiFi device supports WPS (WiFi Protected Setup), you’ll be able to set up a wireless network connection quickly with the press of a button.
  • The XFINITY Wireless Gateway also handles advanced functions such as:
    • Firewall
    • Parental Controls
    • Port Forwarding
    • Port Blocking
    • Diagnostic Tools
    • WiFi Protected Setup (WPS)
  • Every XFINITY Wireless Gateway has a unique, pre-set WiFi Network Name (SSID) and Network Key (Password) for maximum wireless security. It’s helpful to keep these default settings because if you forget them, you can easily find them on the Wireless Gateway’s bottom panel label.
  • The XFINITY Wireless Gateway Quick Start Guide is available at http://customer.comcast.com/userguides

Resetting the XFINITY Wireless Gateway

Try a Normal Reset if you’re having trouble connecting to your network or accessing the Internet.

A Normal Reset reboots your XFINITY Wireless Gateway, but maintains your personal settings, like your router name and password. Your XFINITY Internet and XFINITY Voice service may be unavailable for up to five minutes during the reset process.

For a Normal Reset:

  • Insert a thin object into the slot labeled Reset located on the rear panel.
  • Press the button for 2-5 seconds.
  • Release the button to restart the XFINITY Wireless Gateway and perform a normal reset.

Note:
Do not press the button for more than 15 seconds, as this will perform a Factory Reset and restore all factory default settings. You’ll lose any settings you’ve customized, such as your Network Name (SSID), Network Password (Key), parental controls, firewall settings, etc.

To learn about a Factory Reset, including other types of resets, go to http://customer.comcast.com/userguides.

XFINITY Wireless Gateway's Front and Top Panels

The XFINITY Wireless Gateway's front panel features white LED lights to let you know the status of different functions. These indicate the status of the AC power, upstream and downstream connectivity, Internet, WiFi, phone, and battery.

XFINITY Wireless Gateway's Back Panel

On the XFINITY Wireless Gateway's back panel, you'll find connection ports, the Reset button, and Ethernet LED lights for your wired connections.

XFINITY Wireless Gateway's Default Settings

The XFINITY Wireless Gateway's bottom panel includes an information label.

The information label provides important information you will need to manually connect wireless products to your home network. These include the default settings for:

  • Network Name (SSID)
  • Encryption
  • Network Key
  • WPS PIN
The following is a sample label, but labels may differ slightly between XFINITY Wireless Gateway models:

Installing the XFINITY Wireless Gateway's Battery (Only for XFINITY Voice Service)

A backup battery can be installed in your XFINITY Wireless Gateway to provide additional hours of XFINITY Voice service during a power outage. Visit www.xfinity.com/voicebattery or call 1-888-972-1261 to purchase a battery.
(Backup batteries are not available for purchase from Comcast by Unlimited Select customers.)

The XFINITY Wireless Gateway has a battery compartment on the bottom panel. View the battery's status by accessing the Battery menu from the Admin Tool at http://10.0.0.1. The battery will provide backup for XFINITY Voice service in case of a power outage, but is not intended to replace the AC power for an extended period.

To install a battery, follow these steps:

  1. Place the XFINITY Wireless Gateway sideways on a flat surface.
  2. Remove the battery cover on the bottom panel and set it aside.
  3. Align the battery connector with the battery slot.
  4. Replace the battery cover.
Note: Do not unplug the power cord of your XFINITY Wireless Gateway for an extended period. If the XFINITY Wireless Gateway is left unplugged and the battery power supply is drained, you won't be able to make any phone calls, including 911 emergency calls in the event of a power outage.

Plugging in Your Home Phone

On the back of the panel of the XFINITY Wireless Gateway, you'll find two phone ports. Here you can plug phones or fax machines:

  • Port 1: Primary phone line.
  • Port 2: Secondary phone line.

Creating a Wired Internet Connection

You can connect the XFINITY Wireless Gateway to computers using a standard Ethernet cable. Simply plug an Ethernet cable into one of the 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports, located on the back panel of the XFINITY Wireless Gateway.

Each of the ports has two LED indicators that indicate the traffic speed.

  • Green indicates 1000 Mbit/s (Gigabit Ethernet).
  • Orange indicates 10/100 Mbit/s (Fast Ethernet).

Creating a Wireless Internet Connection

The following chart contains basic instructions for connecting popular devices to a wireless network. Certain devices may require different wireless connection steps.

  1. In the list of available wireless networks, select the same Wireless Network Name (SSID) as the one identified on your XFINITY Wireless Gateway’s bottom panel label.
  2. Enter the Wireless Network Password Key in the Network Key field (Windows) or Password field (Mac). This information is also identified on your XFINITY Wireless Gateway’s bottom panel label.
  3. Click the confirmation button (typically labeled OK, Connect, or Join).
  4. Test your Internet connection by opening a web browser and typing in a valid URL.
  5. Repeat these steps for each wireless device you want to connect to your network.
Note: Can’t connect a particular device? It may be an older device that requires the ‘802.11 b’ WiFi mode. If you have an ‘802.11 b’ device, the Gateway’s WiFi mode needs to be set to ‘802.11 b/g/n’ to allow ‘b’ devices to connect. Here’s how:

  1. Log in to the Admin Tool at http://10.0.0.1.
  2. Go to Gateway > Connection > WiFi.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. For Mode, select 802.11 b/g/n.
  5. Click Save Settings.
Keep in mind that changing the mode may affect the performance of all your connected network devices.

Setting up WiFi Connection using WPS

  • WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) lets you easily set up secure WiFi networks. Many newer WiFi products use WPS to eliminate the need to manually enter WiFi information, such as the Password (Key).
  • Most WPS-capable devices will work with your XFINITY Wireless Gateway using either the default Push Button method or PIN method.
  • If you’re not sure if your computer supports WPS, look for a WPS sticker on your computer or WiFi device. If none is found, your computer is probably not compatible with WPS. In this case, follow the steps under Creating a Wireless Internet Connection.

Push Button Method (Recommended)
  1. Press the WPS button on the computer or WiFi device.
  2. Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on the top panel of your XFINITY Wireless Gateway.
  3. The computer or WiFi device should display a message when it has successfully connected to your home network.

Note
: When you press the WPS button on the XFINITY Wireless Gateway, the WPS LED will blink.  It will stop blinking when a device is connected successfully.  If the connection is not successful, then it will continue to blink for a few minutes before stopping.  Wait until the LED stops blinking before retrying or connecting another WPS product.

PIN Connectivity
  1. Log in to the Admin Tool at http://10.0.0.1.
  2. Go to Gateway > Connection > WiFi.
  3. Click Enable for WPS PIN Method.
  4. Select PIN Number for Connection Options.  The Wireless Client's PIN field will appear.
  5. Enter the PIN number generated by the wireless device.
  6. Click Pair.  (If your WPS client prompts you for a PIN, enter the PIN from the XFINITY Wireless Gateway's bottom panel label.)
