- Diagnostic Tools
Resetting the Wireless Gateway
The Reset button is recessed to protect against accidental reset. It has two functions, depending on the length of time held:
- Normal Reset: Insert a thin object and hold the Reset button for 2-5 seconds to reboot the Wireless Gateway and keep your personal settings.
- Factory Reset: Insert a thin object and hold the Reset button for 15 or more seconds to restore the Wireless Gateway to its default factory settings.
CAUTION: This will delete ALL your personal settings.
Note: You can also reset your Wireless Gateway using the administration site at http://10.0.0.1.

Wireless Gateway's status lights
The Wireless Gateway's front panel features white LED lights to let you know the status of different functions. These indicate the status of the AC power, upstream and downstream connectivity, Internet, WiFi, phone, and battery.

Wireless Gateway's ports
On the Wireless Gateway's back panel, you'll find connection ports, the Reset button, and Ethernet LED lights for your wired connections.

Wireless Gateway's default settings
The Wireless Gateway's bottom panel includes an information label.
- The information label provides important information you will need to manually connect wireless products to your home network. These include the default settings for:
- Network Name (SSID)
- Encryption
- Network Key
- WPS PIN

Installing the Wireless Gateway's battery (Only for XFINITY Voice Service)
If you subscribe to XFINITY Voice service, your Wireless Gateway will come with a battery for temporary service in case of a power outage. It provides up to 5 hours talk time and 8 hours standby time, but is not intended to take the place of the AC power cable. The battery compartment, located on the underside of the Wireless Gateway, houses a Lithium Ion battery.
If you need to install or replace the battery:
- Place the Wireless Gateway sideways on a flat surface.
- Remove the battery cover on the bottom panel and set it aside.
- Insert the battery in the battery compartment with the corresponding polarity correctly in place.
- Replace the battery cover.
Do not unplug the power cord of your Wireless Gateway for an extended period. If left unplugged and the battery power supply is drained, you won't be able to make any phone calls, including 911 emergency calls.

Plugging in your home phone
On the back of the panel of the Wireless Gateway, you'll find two phone ports. Here you can plug phones or fax machines.

Bridge Mode
The Wireless Gateway's Bridge Mode feature lets you use your existing router instead of the routing function of the Wireless Gateway. To enable or disable Bridge Mode, call 1-800-XFINITY.
Default settings
If you're an advanced user, you may want to change some settings on the Wireless Gateway. If so, it may be helpful for you to know the default settings.
- WPS – enabled
- Admin Site – http://10.0.0.1
- User Name – admin (not case-sensitive)
- Password – password (case-sensitive)
- Firewall Configuration – low (allows most traffic)
- UPnP – enabled
All other Wireless Gateway features are disabled by default. You can go to http://10.0.0.1 to enable and modify the Wireless Gateway features.
Creating a wireless Internet connection
Although the Wireless Gateway supports a wired Ethernet cable connection, you may prefer the mobility of a wireless connection instead. For WPS-compatible products, see Setting Up WiFi Connection Using WPS.
- First, you'll need information located on the Wireless Gateway. Lift the Wireless Gateway, and from the label located on the bottom panel, write down the Network Name (SSID) and Network Key.

- On your computer, take a look at the list of the available wireless networks. Although the wireless icon varies by different operating systems, on most computers you'll find the icon in the task or menu bar (as shown in the examples below).
On Windows® operating systems, click the wireless connections icon
from the task bar.

On Mac OS®, click the wireless connections icon
from the menu bar.

Windows is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and other countries. Mac OS is a registered trademark of Apple Inc.
- From the list of available wireless networks, select the Network Name (SSID) you wrote down in Step 1.
- Enter the Network Key (case-sensitive) from Step 1 in the Network Security Key field (on Windows) or Password field (on Macs).
- Click OK or Connect. You should now be connected to the Internet. Test your connection by opening a web browser and typing in a valid URL ( www.xfinity.com ). If you're not connected to the Internet, check to make sure that you entered the correct Network Key and try again.
Setting up WiFi connection using WPS
If you have a computer or other electronic that supports WPS (WiFi Protected Setup), then you can use the Wireless Gateway's WPS feature. Simply put—WPS automatically sets up a secure WiFi network without entering any network information. Many wireless products, which are capable of WPS, display a WPS sticker or label.
If you don't see one, then your product is probably NOT compatible with WPS. In this case, you'll need to enter your network information manually.
There are two methods of WPS: Push Button Configuration (PBC) or the Personal Identification Network (PIN).
Setting up WiFi Connectivity on Your Wireless Gateway Using the PBC Method
- Press the WPS button on your computer or wireless product.
- Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on the top panel of your Wireless Gateway.
- Your computer will display a success message when it has been connected to your home network.
Note: When you press the WPS button, it will stay lit for 5 minutes (even if the connection was unsuccessful). Wait until the light turns off before retrying or connecting another WPS product.
Setting up WiFi Connectivity on Your Wireless Gateway Using the PIN Method
- Open your computer's WPS utility and create a PIN number. Make a note of the PIN number. The WPS utility will begin its countdown to 2 minutes.
- In a web browser, type in http://10.0.0.1 to access the Wireless Gateway administration website.
- Sign in using with the following information:
- Username – admin
- Password – password (case-sensitive)
- Select Gateway > Connection > WiFi.
- Before the WPS Utility finishes its countdown, enter the PIN number from Step 1 above in the Enter Wireless Client's PIN field.
- Click PAIR WITH MY WIFI CLIENT.
- Your computer will detect the Wireless Gateway and establish a WiFi connection.
Note : If your WPS client prompts you to enter the Wireless Gateway's PIN during the WPS Connection, enter the WPS printed on the label on the bottom panel of your Wireless Gateway.
Changing the settings on your Wireless Gateway
- You can view information about your Wireless Gateway online at http://10.0.0.1.
- From here, you can also change basic and advanced settings of your home network.
Securing your home network administration site
The Wireless Gateway's settings can be viewed and changed from its administration site at http://10.0.0.1. By changing the default password of the administration site, you'll be protecting your home network.
- In a web browser, type http://10.0.0.1 to log into the Wireless Gateway's administration site.
- Enter admin and password as shown.

- Click Login.
Wireless Gateway Name and Password
- Enter password for the Current Password.

- Now enter a new password of your choice. When creating a new password, choose a password that is at least 8 characters long, contains upper and lower case letters, as well as at least one number. Re-enter to confirm your password. (You'll need this password to change settings in the future.)
- For future reference, write your Wireless Gateway web administration password down.
- Click Next Step. Continue to Setting Up and Securing Your Network.
Setting up and securing your network
- WiFi Network Name (SSID): Change the default name of your new WiFi Network. The new name will appear in the list of available wireless networks.

For future reference, write your WiFi Network Name (SSID) down.
- Encryption Method: Select an encryption method to secure data between your computer and the Wireless Gateway. The recommended setting, WPAWPA2-PSK (TKIP/AES), is compatible with most computers and provides the best security and performance.
- WiFi Network Password: Create a WiFi Network Password. This will be required by any wireless product to access your secure wireless network. For future reference, write your WiFi Network Password down.
- Reconnecting to the Network: Click Finish. Since you have changed your WiFi settings, you no longer have a WiFi connection. Re-connect to the Wireless Gateway using the new password you just created. Follow these steps:
- View the available wireless networks and select the WiFi Network Name (SSID) you created in step 1 above.
- Enter the WiFi Network Password (case-sensitive) you created in step 3. You should now be re-connected to the Internet using your new password. Test your connection by opening a web browser and typing in a valid URL ( www.xfinity.com ). If you're not connected to the Internet, check to make sure that you entered the correct Network Key and try again.
